Here is a bold statement: ‘You always get what you ask for’. You always get results that match what you’ve instructed your mind to create.
“No way! That can’t be true”, you may say. “I get many results I don’t want”. Well, consider this… if you get what you ask for, what happens if you ask for what you DON’T want?
You may think that is a ridiculous thing to do and no one in their right mind would do that. But, in a way we are instructing our mind to create the results we DON’T want quite often.
Want to find out how?
Try this mind experiment. I’ll give you a simple instruction and you try to do it with all your might.
Here is the instruction:
“Don’t think of blue!
“Whatever you do, don’t let even a FLASH OF BLUE enter your mind.
“Don’t even imagine what it might be like to FEEL BLUE”.
You cannot NOT think about the thing you don’t want to think about without thinking about it, can you?
This is because, the mind can only represent things in our senses (pictures, sounds, feelings, tastes and smells). The mind can easily represent ‘blue’, as it can easily represent ‘stress’, ‘worry’, ‘yelling’, ‘happy’, ‘flower’ and ‘car’.
How do you represent ‘don’t’ or ‘not’ in your senses? There’s not really a picture and it doesn’t really have a sound, but it does have a feeling, doesn’t it? Notice what happens in your body when you say these words, ‘not’, don’t’. For most people it is a tense, ‘brake’ feeling.
As a mother, I used to say, “I don’t want to get frustrated with my child”, and it was like driving with my foot on the brake. I put in a lot of effort and I seemed to make no progress. The result = ‘frustrated’ + ‘tense’.
When I think about Einstein’s quote,
“ANYTHING the mind can CONCIEVE… it can achieve”,
I realised the negative instruction was making my mind conceive what I didn’t want and that made me more frustrated. So, I started to pay a whole lot more attention to how I speak to myself. If I catch a ‘don’t’, or ‘not’, or ‘stop’, I ask, “what would I like to do instead?”, and then I let my mind represent more useful things.
How does it feel different when you ask for what you want positively rather than negatively? What differences do you notice with the way you are imagining your outcomes when you give a positive instruction? How does your energy level change?
